Jicaro Island Lodge occupies a small private island in the Isletas de Granada, on Lake Nicaragua, with Mombacho Volcano across the water. Guests arrive by boat from Granada, a trip of just a few minutes. Nine two-storey casitas stand under the rainforest trees, and each one has a private waterfront deck, a hammock and an outdoor living area.
The building story is worth knowing. Architect Matthew Falkner designed the lodge, and the casitas and their furniture are made of tropical hardwood from trees that Hurricane Felix toppled. Cross ventilation, ceiling fans and the shade of the canopy keep the rooms cool, so there is no air conditioning.
Check-in is from 2:00 pm and check-out is at 11:00 am. The stay is all-inclusive. The lake around the island is safe for swimming, and the Pacific beaches are a two-hour drive from Granada.
