Nicaragua's Northern Highlands: Coffee Farms, Cloud Forest and Cigar Towns
Matagalpa, Jinotega and Estelí are the mountain towns north of Managua, where shade coffee estates, cloud forest reserves and cigar factories share one cool, green stretch of the country.

Why the northern highlands belong on your route
Matagalpa, Jinotega and Estelí are the green, cool mountain towns of the north. Matagalpa sits at 700 metres and carries the nickname Land of Eternal Spring. The area around Jinotega produces 65% of the country's coffee harvest, so a stay here almost always includes a walk through a working farm. Selva Negra Mountain Resort is one: a coffee estate founded in 1891 by German immigrants, with a cloud forest reserve beside it where howler monkeys live. Estelí, at 800 metres on the Pan-American Highway, is home to some of the best-known Cuban-leaf tobacco producers in Nicaragua, and its cigar factories run tours. Between the towns you find the cloud forest of Datanlí-El Diablo, the orchids of Miraflor and Somoto Canyon, where you hike, climb and swim. Montebrisa Boutique B&B gives you a base in Matagalpa town itself. The distances between these places make the highlands a destination for a stay, not a day trip from Managua.

Best time to go
January to March falls inside the best window on every weather source we checked, with the driest and clearest days. Rain is most likely from May to October, though the hills stay green all year. The coffee harvest at Selva Negra runs from mid-November to mid-February, so a January trip puts dry weather and harvest activity together.

Frequently asked questions
When is the coffee harvest?
At Selva Negra the harvest runs from mid-November to mid-February. Guests who visit in those months see the harvest activity on the estate, and the coffee tour covers the shade-grown plantation.
Is it cooler than the rest of Nicaragua?
Yes. Matagalpa sits at 700 metres and Estelí at 800 metres, and Matagalpa is nicknamed the Land of Eternal Spring. Pack a light layer for misty mornings and evenings.
How long should we stay, and what pairs with the highlands?

What is there to do besides coffee?
Estelí has cigar factory tours, including Drew Estate and Joya de Nicaragua. Miraflor offers cloud forest and orchids, Somoto Canyon offers hiking and swimming, and Datanlí-El Diablo has trails and a waterfall.
How do we get from Managua?
By road, either in a private transfer or on the public bus. Published drive times for Managua to Matagalpa vary between sources, so we confirm the timing for your arrival day when we design the trip.
