Granada, founded in 1524, sits beside the 365 Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and Masaya Volcano. León has a UNESCO cathedral, Cerro Negro and the black sand beaches at Las Peñitas. Ometepe, two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua, is a ferry ride from San Jorge.

For the Pacific, San Juan del Sur has surf beaches and calmer coves, and the Emerald Coast around Popoyo adds Tola's beaches, horseback riding and golf. The Corn Islands are a flight from Managua. Río San Juan is reached by boat, with the fortress village of El Castillo and rainforest lodges by Indio Maíz. Up north, the highlands around Matagalpa, Jinotega and Estelí mean coffee farms, cloud forest and cigar towns.
