Why go to Río San Juan
The San Juan River runs east from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean Sea, and this region follows it. San Carlos sits where the lake drains into the river. Downstream, El Castillo is a village of about 1,500 people on the south bank. No road reaches it. You arrive by boat, and its lanes have no cars or motorcycles. Above the houses stands the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, begun on 10 March 1673 and finished in 1675 to protect Granada from pirate attacks. It now holds a museum and a library. Beyond the village lies the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, one of Nicaragua's largest, where tapir, manatee and jaguar live and the harpy eagle is among the birds. Guacimo Lodge and Hotel Luna del Rio are the two places we keep here. Guacimo Lodge stands on the Nicaraguan bank just outside the reserve and can be reached only by river. Hotel Luna del Rio is a five-room hotel on the water in El Castillo itself. Days here are measured in boat rides, forest walks and quiet evenings.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get to El Castillo?
No road reaches the village. You come by boat from San Carlos, either on a public boat or a faster one that takes about half the time. San Carlos can be reached by a short domestic flight from Managua, or from Costa Rica through the Las Tablillas border crossing.
Can I visit Río San Juan as a day trip from Costa Rica?
We could not confirm a day trip that works well. The boat between San Carlos and El Castillo takes a good part of a day in each direction, so we plan an overnight stay in the region.
What wildlife lives in the Indio Maíz reserve?
The reserve's wildlife includes tapir, manatee, jaguar and peccary. Birds include the harpy eagle and the bellbird, and monkeys and caimans are also found there.
Does it rain all year?
Yes, to some degree. March is the driest month, with 118 mm at El Castillo, and the forest around Indio Maíz receives six meters of rain a year. A light rain jacket is the one item we suggest for every month.
