Managua: Arrival and Departure Nights in Nicaragua's Capital

Managua is Nicaragua's capital and main airport city, with the international airport 11 kilometers from downtown, and the place we book for your first and last nights.

At a glance

  • Fly into: MGA, Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. 11 km east of downtown, linked to the city by the six-lane Carretera Norte.
  • Best weather: December to April. The months most sources we checked list as dry; rain is heaviest in September and October.
  • Pairs with: Granada and León. Managua sits between the two rival cities, so either one is a natural next stop.

Why Managua works for the first and last night

Managua became the national capital in 1852, chosen as a compromise between the rival cities of León and Granada, and it still sits between them. The city lies on the southwestern shore of Lake Xolotlán, also called Lake Managua. Augusto C. Sandino International Airport, the country's main international gateway, is 11 kilometers east of downtown on the Carretera Norte, a six-lane highway. A late arrival or an early departure therefore does not call for a long drive. The old center was badly damaged in the 1972 earthquake. The Old Cathedral still stands as a ruin on Plaza de la Revolución, and the National Palace of Culture beside it houses the national museum. After 1972, new hotels and shops were built outside the old center, which is where most of our hotels are. We plan Managua for arrival and departure nights: a good room, a short transfer, and enough in town for an afternoon if your flight lands early. Granada, León and the lava lake of Masaya Volcano are the reasons to move on.

When to go

December to April is the stretch that most weather sources we checked list as dry, and it is the time we suggest for a first visit. Outside those months rain arrives, and it is heaviest in September and October. Because you are in the city only briefly, the season matters less here than at the beach or volcano you visit next.
