Totoco Eco Resort

Solar-powered cabins above Balgüe, facing Concepción volcano

About Totoco Eco Resort

Totoco Eco Resort is an off-grid eco-lodge in Balgüe, on the slopes of Maderas volcano on Ometepe Island. It has eight cabins, an infinity pool and a restaurant that draws on its own farm. Reach the island by ferry across Lake Nicaragua, then take the lane that climbs 800 meters from Balgüe.

Totoco sits on the slopes of Maderas volcano, inside the Ometepe biosphere reserve, 800 meters up the Callejón de la Palmera from Balgüe. The eight cabins are built from island palm, bamboo grown on the property and bricks fired on site. Each has a private veranda, and the views run across Lake Nicaragua to Concepción volcano.

The lodge runs entirely on its own systems: 62 solar panels power the cabins, restaurant and bar. Breakfast is included with the stay. Lunch and dinner mix Nicaraguan dishes with Western ones, with vegetarian and vegan options, and many ingredients come from the lodge's farm. The Elixir Bar opens at 2:00 pm, a good hour to claim a seat before sunset.

A yoga shala holds daily classes, and massages are given on site. The activity list covers the San Ramón waterfall, kayaking on the El Caimán river, horseback rides on the beach or forest trails, petroglyph visits and hikes up Maderas or Concepción. Howler monkeys are close neighbors.
