Selva Negra
About Selva Negra
Selva Negra is a mountain lodge on the Finca La Hammonia coffee farm, at Km 140 of the Matagalpa-Jinotega highway in Nicaragua's northern highlands. It has 15 room types, from cabins and hotel-style rooms to five-bedroom family chalets, plus a lakeside restaurant and forest trails with more than 250 bird species. Guests arrive by road.
Selva Negra sits on Finca La Hammonia, a shaded coffee farm that a German settler, Hans Bösche, started in the 1890s. The first cabins went up in 1975, and the lodge has grown around the working farm ever since. You can sleep in a cabin among the trees, in a hotel-style room facing the lagoon, or in a chalet with up to five bedrooms. Rooms have hot water, a desk and a safe, but no air conditioning.
Meals are at La Laguna, the restaurant beside the lake, where the kitchen cooks with vegetables, honey, cacao and herbs grown on the estate. Roy's Bakery turns out cakes made with the farm's own milk, eggs and cacao, served with Selva Negra coffee.
Trails of different lengths cross the mountain, past orchids, bromeliads and howler monkeys, with more than 250 bird species recorded along them. The farm also runs coffee and cacao tours, horseback rides, mountain biking and night walks. Wi-Fi reaches only the restaurant area, so plan on being offline in your cabin.
