Why the Emerald Coast
The Emerald Coast is the Pacific shoreline of Tola, in Rivas Department. Tola is considered one of Nicaragua's premier beach and adventure destinations, and the coast shows why: resort estates, fishing villages and surf beaches share one long line of sand and cliff. Popoyo is counted among the best surfing beaches in Central America, and offshore winds that cross the narrow isthmus from Lake Nicaragua help keep its waves clean. Rancho Santana has five beaches and a working farm, with horseback riding for children from age three. Mukul sits on Manzanillo Beach beside an 18-hole course designed by David McLay Kidd. Gigante is a fishing village on a sheltered bay, good for swimming, boat trips and fresh-caught fish on the beach. Aqua Oceanfront Resort stands on Playa Redonda next to Gigante, and Hotel Cafe con Leche has a surf break called Coffee Break in front of its beachfront rooms. Four bases, one coast, and room to change pace each day.
Surf at every level
Popoyo's main break is always working, Mukul's beach breaks suit novices, and Playa Amarillo is known for beginner-friendly waves.
Beach days with children
Rancho Santana offers five beaches and horseback riding from age three, and Mukul has a kids club.
Land and wildlife
Hot springs at Las Salinas, tide pools at Guasacate, guided hikes, and turtle releases at Chacocente Wildlife Reserve, just south of Popoyo.
